Soghomon Soghomonian, commonly known as Komitas (Armenian: ???????; Gomidas in Western Armenian) (26 September or 8 October 1869 – October 22, 1935), was an Armenian priest, composer, choir leader, singer, music ethnologist, music pedagogue and musicologist. Many regard him as the founder of modern Armenian classical music.Komitas experienced a mental breakdown after witnessing the horrors of 1915 Armenian Genocide and is considered a martyr of the genocide.
The most important Armenian composer whose music is heard in Mikhail Vartanov's "The Color of Armenian Soil" Tsvet armyanskoy zemli (1969) which features the first appearance on film of Sergei Parajanov; both Komitas and Parajanov are buried at the Pantheon in Armenia's capital
