Howard Cable was born on December 15, 1920 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada as Howard Reid Cable. He is known for his work on Mr. Scrooge (1964), Christmas Carols (1947) and Hockey Night in Canada (1952).
He was a prominent Canadian musician whose career spanned more than 70 years. He was a conductor, composer, and arranger for many ensembles and organizations.

He was appointed a member of the Order of Canada in 1999.

He studied clarinet, piano and oboe. He completed his music education at the Toronto Conservatory, studying with Ernest MacMillan, Healey Willan, Ettore Mazzolini and John Weinzweig. His early career was in radio production, first at Toronto's CFRB and later CBC. He was music director of the radio show "Canadian General Electric Hour" from 1948 to 1954, and the TV program "Showtime" from 1954 to 1959.
