Havok is an outspoken supporter of the straight edge lifestyle and veganism. After gaining some popularity in their own lack, AFI played a reunion show at the Phoenix Theater for several hundred supporters. After the great reception in the fans, they chose to reunite and record an album. In 1997, the group released their third full length record, Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes. The following launch was the A Fire Inside EP. In 1999, the group released Black Sails in the Sunset, that was the very first record to range from the existing lineup: Havok, Carson, Hunter Burgan and Jade Puget. In the autumn of 1999, they released the All Hallows EP. In 2000, they released The Art of Drowning to reasonable record sales. The group had toured with a different band, Samhain, on their reunion tour. In 2000 when Michale Graves had left the Misfits, Havok was approached by Roadrunner Records to function as newest lead singer of Misfits. Nevertheless, Havok told an interviewer he’d never leave AFI as it was his own group.

Quote
1
I'm an extremist, I have to deal with my own extreme personality, and I walk the fine line of wanting to die and wanting to be the ruler of it all.
2
I find drug use disrespectful, self-destructive, and weak. I want no part of it. I believe in complete respect for myself and others.
3
"As you get older you will gain a bit more control over everything. Don't let anyone, even your parents, break you. Find good people who care about you and surround yourself with just them. If you can't find them at first, find good music and fall into it, let it hold you until they come. I truly hope you enjoy the new record.
4
I became a vegetarian out of compassion for animals and to live as healthy as possible. I realized soon after that I was truly concerned with nonviolent consumption and my own health, a vegan diet was the best decision.
5
Personally I have never found the practice of recreational drug use appealing. In fact, I have always found the lifestyle and the people who surround it to be abhorrent. I never quite understood why anyone would risk sacrificing their bodies, minds, and relationships at the expense of a quick damaging high. I grew up in a small town and at my high school, like every high school, everyone's recreation of choice was drug abuse. I never understood it. I never took part and always felt quite alone in this decision. Then one day I discovered a band called Minor Threat and realized that there were more people out there who thought like me. I was very excited to say the least, and what was more encouraging, these people were part of the oh-so self-destructive punk scene. From that day on I claimed the X. I continue to do so today because I believe the straight edge philosophy is a very positive one that many people, especially young people, can benefit from greatly if they have the desire.
