Claudio Arrau León (February 6, 1903 – June 9, 1991) was a Chilean pianist known for his interpretations of a vast repertoire spanning from the baroque to 20th-century composers, especially Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Schumann, Liszt and Brahms. He is widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century.

His appearance on "The Bell Telephone Hour" was broadcast on the same evening that President John F. Kennedy delivered his Cuban Missile Crisis speech, in which the President informed the U.S. that Soviet missile bases were being constructed in Cuba for a possible nuclear attack.

Among the judges at Arrau's first piano competition was renowned pianist Artur Rubinstein.

One of the world's great pianists, his specialties were composers Frederic Chopin and Franz Liszt, but he had a huge repertory that also covered such composers as Debussy and Beethoven. He recorded all of Beethoven's piano sonatas, as well as the Diabelli Variations. He also recorded all five Beethoven piano concertos twice, with Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 5 (the Emperor) getting a third recording in digital stereo in the mid 1980s.
