He was inflicted with colon cancer in 1997. With surgery to remove an orange size tumor and chemotherapy Eric returned to baseball and had one of the best season's of his exciting career.

Hit .269 with 282 home runs in 1626 games in 17 Seasons with the Reds, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Detroit Tigers, the Baltimore Orioles, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the San Francisco Giants. Member of the 1990 World Series Champion Cincinnati Reds.
