1While he directed A Christmas Carol (1999), his son Joe portrayed Caroline's husband. That character and his wife Caroline previously did not appear in every film adaptation of Charles Dicken's holiday-themed novel. Their scene occurs after the Spirit of Christmas Future compels Scrooge to view his own bedroom with a shrouded corpse of himself on the bed and before the spirit takes him to Bob Cratchit's house.
2Left the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1979 to take up an appointment as artistic director at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and to found a resident theatre company modelled on the RSC. Taught at the Yale School of Drama in 1981 before returning to England.
