David Hugh Jones was born on February 19, 1934 in Poole, Dorset, England. He was a director and producer, known for A Christmas Carol (1999), 84 Charing Cross Road (1987) and Jacknife (1989). He was married to Amanda Jones and Sheila Allen. He died on September 18, 2008 in Rockport, Maine, USA.
While he directed A Christmas Carol (1999), his son Joe portrayed Caroline's husband. That character and his wife Caroline previously did not appear in every film adaptation of Charles Dicken's holiday-themed novel. Their scene occurs after the Spirit of Christmas Future compels Scrooge to view his own bedroom with a shrouded corpse of himself on the bed and before the spirit takes him to Bob Cratchit's house.

Left the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1979 to take up an appointment as artistic director at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and to found a resident theatre company modelled on the RSC. Taught at the Yale School of Drama in 1981 before returning to England.
