He made his Grand Prix debut for Honda on a 500 cc two stroke bike in 1989. Doohan competed successfully throughout the early 1990s and seemed to be on his approach to winning his first world championship when he was critically injured in a training crash before the 1992 Dutch TT. He endured long-term and serious injury to his right leg as a result of medical complications and, at one period, risked amputation of the leg. At that time, Doohan was 65 points in the lead of the tournament, but cannot compete for eight weeks following the crash. After an arduous healing, Doohan returned to racing for the last two races but cannot keep Yamaha rider Wayne Rainey from winning his third straight title (by four points from Doohan). In 1993 he fought using the healing of his leg as well as the capability to race the Honda at elite level, saying afterwards that in that year it had been all he could do to simply keep his ride at Honda. It was also in this time he changed to your left thumb-operated rear brake, as his right foot is not any longer in a position to conduct this function.
