Giuseppe De Santis (11 February 1917 – 16 May 1997) was an Italian film director. One of the most idealistic neorealist filmmakers of the 1940s and 1950s, he wrote and directed films punctuated by ardent cries for social reform.He was the brother of Italian cinematographer Pasqualino De Santis. His wife is Gordana Miletic, actress (former ballet dancer) from the former Yugoslavia
Studied literature, philosophy and cinema during the 1930's. Began to work as a film critic during the early war years. Assisted Luchino Visconti on 'Ossessione' in 1942. After five years as assistant director and screenwriter, made his name as director of films like 'Caccia Tragica' (Tragic Pursuit) and 'Riso Amaro' (Bitter Rice) which examined the socio/economic plight of ordinary people in post-war Italy.
