Tony Hsieh (/e/ “shay”; created December 12, 1973) is an American web entrepreneur and venture capitalist. He could be the CEO of the internet shoe and clothes store Zappos.com. Before joining Zappos, Hsieh co-founded and sold the net marketing system LinkExchange to Microsoft in 1999 for $265 million.

In 1996, Hsieh began developing the idea for an advertising network called LinkExchange. Members were permitted to advertise their site over LinkExchange’s network by showing banner ads on their web site. They started in March 1996, with Hsieh as CEO, and located their first 30 customers by direct e-mailing webmasters. By 1998, the website had over 400,000 members and 5 million advertising rotated daily. The name originated from a challenge. Among Hsieh’s friends said she’d invest everything if they selected “Venture Frogs” as the name, as well as the pair took her up on the stake (although they’ve yet to see any cash). They invested in various technology and Internet startups, including Ask Jeeves, OpenTable and Zappos. In 1999, Nick Swinmurn approached Hsieh and Lin using the concept of selling shoes online.
