Morgridge is from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin and attended Wauwatosa East High School. He graduated in the University of Wisconsin in 1955; while at Wisconsin he joined Delta Upsilon Fraternity. He worked part time at jobs including washing gear in a sweet pea cannery, digging stone in the quarry in Lannon, washing walls in Milwaukee’s Pabst Brewery, doing road construction on Highway 64, and working as a railway brakeman. He earned an MBA from Stanford University in 1957. He joined Cisco in 1988, a four year old firm with 34 workers, as its second chief executive officer and chairman of the board. At his retirement in 2006, Cisco had 50,000 workers in 77 countries. In 2010, Morgridge and his wife contributed $175 million to create the Fund for Wisconsin Scholars, an endowment that will provide grants to low income pupils attending one of Wisconsin’s public schools or universities. Morgridge Family Foundation contributed funds to Immanuel Lutheran School, Mount Olive Lutheran Church, and to several educational and volunteering organizations. Looking back on his life, says John Morgridge, as well as parents, church and school, “it is the community which helps form our moral compass. It is those approaches who I have recalled through my whole life. We have been really blessed with what this nation has given us. And we think, before we expire, to give it back.” Morgridge and his wife are on the list of group of American billionaires who’ve consecrated to provide many their riches to the philanthropic causes or charities within The Giving Pledge.
