From 1996-2005 he was the dean of the school, and before that, Undersecretary of Commerce for international trade in the very first Clinton administration. Formerly he worked on Wall Street as managing director in the Blackstone Group and Lehman Brothers. At Blackstone he worked in the financial advisory and mergers and acquisitions area. From 1996 to 2005, Garten was dean of the Yale School of Management after which he stayed to teach full time. His classes have included “Leading An International Business,” “Wall Street and Washington,” and “Managing Global Catastrophes,” and he’s directed study excursions for pupils to China, Singapore, Dubai and London. In 2006, Garten and a co-worker, David Rothkopf, set up Garten Rothkopf in Washington to provide tactical guidance for world-wide businesses, international organizations and authorities. Garten sits on the boards of directors for many organizations, for example, Aetna Corporation, CarMax, Inc., Credit Suisse Asset Management (a number of mutual funds) and Standard and Poor’s (“the board of supervisors.”) He’s also on the advisory board of Miller Buckfire, a fiscal restructuring business, and he’s a trustee of The International Rescue Committee.
