Rear Admiral in the United States Navy, former flying ace in World War I with the Lafayette Escadrille. Prior to that, he trained pilots for Pancho Villa in Mexico. Served as a special agent with the FBI between 1920 and 1923. Worked in Hollywood as a scriptwriter and technical advisor. During World War II, served aboard an aircraft carrier and a seaplane tender and took part in several amphibious operations in the Pacific theatre. Recipient of a Bronze Star.
