Stephen John Woodward (born 1947) is a New Zealand cricket umpire who stood in 24 Test matches and 30 ODIs.Born in New Zealand, his first Test match was the New Zealand v Pakistan test at Napier in 1979, while his last came in the New Zealand v Sri Lanka test at Wellington in 1991. He also stood in 30 one day internationals and officiated in New Zealand domestic cricket. Unusually for an umpire, he had no experience as a player at first class level.Woodward was umpiring at the other end during the acrimonious second Test between West Indies and New Zealand at Christchurch in February 1980, in which the West Indies protested against the umpiring of Fred Goodall. The West Indies team were disappointed at several of Goodall's decisions in the first Test which West Indies lost narrowly. After similar complaints in the second Test, the West Indies refused to return to the field after tea on the third day. After 11 minutes, they were persuaded to resume. The next day was a rest day. Colin Croft collided with Goodall at the end of his bowling run-up during the fourth day's play.
