Philip Wylie was born on May 12, 1902 in Beverly, Massachusetts, USA as Philip Gordon Wylie. He was a writer, known for Crunch and Des (1955), When Worlds Collide (1951) and Island of Lost Souls (1932). He was married to Frederica Ballard and Johanna (Sally) Ondeck. He died on October 25, 1971 in Miami, Florida, USA.
His novel 'Gladiator' is considered one of the inspirations for Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's iconic character Superman.

A copy of his novel "Gladiator" can be seen in a panel of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' seminal graphic novel "Watchmen" in Hollis Mason's home. Like "Gladiator", "Watchmen" with the character of Dr Manhattan, tackles the question of how an individual with godlike powers would fit into a modern society.
