Michael Denzil Xavier Portillo Bio/Wiki, Net Worth, Married 2018

Michael Denzil Xavier Portillo (born 26 May 1953) is a British journalist, broadcaster, and former Conservative Party politician and Cabinet Minister. Portillo was first elected to the House of Commons in a by-election in 1984; a strong admirer of Margaret Thatcher, and a Eurosceptic, Portillo served as a junior minister under both Thatcher and John Major, before entering the cabinet in 1992. Seen as a likely challenger to Major during the 1995 Conservative leadership election, he stayed loyal. As Defence Secretary, he pressed for a purist Thatcherite course of "clear blue water", separating the policies of the Conservatives from Labour.Portillo unexpectedly lost his Enfield Southgate seat at the 1997 general election; political commentators believed he would have been elected Conservative leader had he retained it. Returning to the Commons through a by-election in Kensington and Chelsea in 1999, Portillo rejoined the front bench as Shadow Chancellor, although his relationship with Conservative Leader William Hague was strained. Standing for the leadership of the party in 2001, Portillo came a narrow third place behind Iain Duncan Smith and Kenneth Clarke. Portillo retired from the Commons at the 2005 general election, and has since pursued his media interests, presenting a wide range of television and radio programmes.

#Quote
1I remember the Tony Blair speech and I was overwhelmed by it. It was one of the best three speeches I heard while I was in Parliament and it helped me to vote for the Iraq War, and the Iraq War was a mistake.
2It may be because I have a Catholic tradition I make a distinction between the soul of a human being and the soul of an animal.
3I think fox hunting and for that matter bullfighting are parts of cultures and I really worry about going around extinguishing the culture of a nation.
4[on fox hunting] I think vermin are going to get slaughtered anyway. Foxes are vermin and mice and rats. I think most people think that foxes are vermin and think they've got to be dealt with one way or another.
5[on Russia's occupation of Crimea] There's going to be no response of any consequence at all against Russia and that's obvious by what people are saying. When David Cameron talks about consequences, since that word is so unspecific and repeated on a daily basis, it is perfectly clear that it is meaningless.
6You drink 'port', you get 'ill' and you say 'o'. - This Week, BBC1 11th February 2010
