Template:Eastern Slavic nameCount Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (Russian: Лев Никола́евич Толсто́й, pronounced [lʲef nʲɪkɐˈlaɪvʲɪt͡ɕ tɐlˈstoj] (13px ); 9 September [O.S. 28 August] 1828 – 20 November [O.S. 7 November] 1910), also known as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer, philosopher and political thinker who primarily wrote novels and short stories. Tolstoy was a master of realistic fiction and is widely considered one of the greatest novelists of all time. He is best known for two long novels, War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877). Tolstoy first achieved literary acclaim in his 20s with his semi-autobiographical trilogy of novels, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852–1856) and Sevastopol Sketches (1855), based on his experiences in the Crimean War. His fiction output also includes two additional novels, dozens of short stories, and several famous novellas, including The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Family Happiness, and Hadji Murad. Later in life, he also wrote plays and essays.Tolstoy is equally known for his complicated and paradoxical persona and for his extreme moralistic and ascetic views, which he adopted after a moral crisis and spiritual awakening in the 1870s, after which he also became noted as a moral thinker, social reformer, and Georgist. His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him in later life to become a fervent Christian anarchist and anarcho-pacifist. His ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal twentieth-century figures as Mohandas Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., and James Bevel. 1 | Wrong doesn't become less wrong because the majority partake in it. |
2 | [on family] Happy families are all alike; every unhappy one is unhappy in its own way. |
3 | All happy families resemble one another, but each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. |
4 | Without knowing what I am and why I am here, life is impossible. |
5 | The two most powerful warriors are patience and time. |
6 | And all people live, not by reason of any care they have for themselves, but by the love for them that is in other people. |
7 | The sole meaning of life is to serve humanity. |
8 | Love is life. All, everything that I understand, I understand only because I love. Everything is, everything exists, only because I love. Everything is united by it alone. Love is God, and to die means that I, a particle of love, shall return to the general and eternal source. |
9 | It is amazing how complete is the delusion that beauty is goodness. |
10 | Boredom: the desire for desires. |
11 | All violence consists in some people forcing others, under threat of suffering or death, to do what they do not want to do. |

1 | His conversion from a dissolute and privileged society author to the non-violent and spiritual anarchist of his latter days was brought about by his experience in the army as well as two trips around Europe in 1857 and 1860-61. Others who followed the same path were Alexander Herzen, Mikhail Bakunin and Peter Kropotkin. During his 1857 visit, Tolstoy witnessed a public execution in Paris, a traumatic experience that would mark the rest of his life. Writing in a letter to his friend Vasily Botkin: "The truth is that the State is a conspiracy designed not only to exploit, but above all to corrupt its citizens ... Henceforth, I shall never serve any government anywhere.". |
2 | Hated much of his early work, which he believed had no artistic passion behind it. |
3 | Was one of Mahatma Gandhi's inspirations for taking up pacifism and non-violence. |
4 | Was notoriously impossible to interview and hated dealing with the public. He was especially wary of the new invention of the movie camera in the early 20th century. Reporters would hide out and try to ambush him. One such reporter, much like the others, hid out for 3 days waiting to ambush him on the way home with his family. Instead of succeeding he accidentally broke his film camera which literally brought him to tears. Taking pity on the man Tolstoy helped him take his camera to a blacksmith shop to repair it after which he agreed to being filmed. This started a relationship of the only man ever allowed to film Tolstoy. |
5 | Started writing when he was twenty-three after joining the army. |
6 | Whenever he encountered a problem in writing, he would start to play solitaire, in the hopes that the solution would come to him during the game. |
7 | After his parent's death, Tolstoy and two of his siblings went to live with their aunt, Toinette, who had once promised their father to look after his children as if they were her own. |
8 | His father died in the street when Tolstoy was eight years old. |
9 | Tolstoy's mother died before his second birthday. |
10 | Was probably the first writer to have groupies. Toward the end of his life there were nearly one hundred fans living in and around his home just so they could experience his greatness firsthand. |
11 | Father of Alexandra Tolstoy and Ilya Tolstoy. |
12 | Forced his wife to read his diaries of his bachelor escapades (he was 34, she was 18 when they married). She bore him 13 children, 7 of whom survived to adulthood. |
13 | He was the obvious choice for the first Nobel Prize in Literature in 1901, but one of the Nobel judges criticized his "narrow-minded hostility to all forms of civilization." The conservative panel instead gave the award to the French poet Armand Sully-Prudhomme, whose works have not stood the test of time as Tolstoy's have. |
14 | Tolstoy was a direct descendant of Genghis Khan, through the marriage of Prince Fyodor of Yaroslavl to Anna of the Tatars, a great-great-great-granddaughter of the Khan. |
