Sir Hugh Carleton Greene KCMG, OBE (15 November 1910 – 19 February 1987) was a British journalist and television executive. He was Director-General of the BBC from 1960 to 1969, and is generally credited with modernising an organisation that had fallen behind in the wake of the launch of ITV in 1955. He was the brother of Graham Greene, the English novelist.
Parents with Helga Connollly of Graham Carleton Greene (Berlin, 10 June1936-UK, 10 October 2016), Publisher (Jonathan Cape 1966-1988) and chairman of the Trustees at the British Museum 1996-2002.
After much overseas broadcasting work both before and during the war, became Assistant Controller of Overseas Service for the BBC in the 1950s, and Director General of the BBC in 1960 until 1968.
