He was on the teaching staff of Columbia University from 1912 onward. He was awarded the 1924 Pulitzer Prize for his 1922 play Hell-Bent Fer Heaven.

Playwright and occasional theatrical director. Hughes had 5 productions appear on Broadway from 1921-1934. While none of these (see "Other Works") were huge hits, his most successful melodrama was purchased by Warner Brothers, then a lower rung studio, and produced as Hell-Bent for Heaven (1926).
