Georges Sadoul (4 February 1904 – 13 October 1967) was a French journalist and cinema writer.Once a surrealist, he became a communist in 1932. He was a journalist of the Lettres Françaises.He is the author of l'Histoire générale du cinéma, a comprehensive work on world cinema. He also produced an important work on the filmmaker Georges Méliès.Sadoul was born in Nancy. He was trained at the Sorbonne and the IDHEC, a French cinema school.He is also known for writing encyclopedias of film and filmmakers, many of which have been translated into English.He died in Paris, aged 63.
His books, considered standard reference works on the history of cinema, were translated into 22 languages.
