Edgar Wallace Bio/Wiki, Net Worth, Married 2018

Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace (1 April 1875 – 10 February 1932) was an English writer.Born into poverty as an illegitimate London child, Wallace left school at 12. Joining the army at 21, he was a war correspondent during the Second Boer War for Reuters and The Daily Mail. Struggling with debt, he left South Africa, returned to London and began writing thrillers to raise income, publishing books such as The Four Just Men (1905). Drawing on time as a reporter in the Congo, covering the Belgian atrocities, Wallace serialised short stories in magazines, later publishing collections such as Sanders of the River (1911). He signed with Hodder and Stoughton in 1921 and became an internationally recognised author. After a disastrous bid to stand as Liberal MP for Blackpool in the 1931 general election, Wallace moved to Hollywood, where he worked as a script writer for RKO studios. He died suddenly from undiagnosed diabetes, during the initial drafting of King Kong (1933).A prolific writer, one of Wallace's publishers claimed that a quarter of all books then read in England were written by him. As well as journalism, Wallace wrote screen plays, poetry, historical non-fiction, 18 stage plays, 957 short stories and over 170 novels, 12 in 1929 alone. More than 160 films have been made of Wallace's work. He is remembered for as a writer of 'the colonial imagination', for the J. G. Reeder detective stories, the Green Archer and creation of King Kong. Selling over 50 million copies of his combined works in various editions, the Economist describes him as "one of the most prolific thriller writers of [the 20th] century", although few of his books are still in print in the UK.

The only contribution of his that would make it into the finished King Kong (1933) was the idea of giving Kong human characteristics.
In 1927 he was elected chairman of the board of British Lion Films. He received 10000 pounds worth of stock, 1000 for each one of his works filmed by the company, 10% of the company's annual profits and an annual salary of 500 pounds. The deal was not particularly lucrative for him, although he acted and directed in many of the films made from his works.
After suffering business losses due to his his experience with British Lion Films, Wallace ran for a seat in Parliament on the Liberal Party ticket for Blackpool. He was defeated.
Wallace's outlook was prolific. During he 1920s alone he wrote 170 novels, 170 plays and hundreds of short stories, a prodigious output. Excluding the Bible and textbooks, a fourth of all the books manufactured in the U.K were written by him.
Although his estate consisted mostly of debts, the ongoing popularity of his works through continuing royalties put his estate in the black within two years of his death.

He died while in Hollywood working on a film project that would become King Kong (1933). He had only been in the country for three months before succumbing to double pneumonia in February 1932.
Almost 30 years after his death there was a sudden explosion of popularity for his works due to British--and especially German--feature films based on his stories. The were also numerous TV adaptations produced in the UK.
In his heyday, he was one of the most popular writers in the UK, second only to Charles Dickens.
Was an early mentor of director Carol Reed.
Father of Bryan Edgar Wallace, who followed in his father's footsteps as a writer of thrillers, some of which were filmed.
For a 20th-century author he has had the greatest number of novels made into movies.
