Barbara Gowdy, CM (born 25 June 1950) is a Canadian novelist and short story writer. Born in Windsor, Ontario, she is the long-time partner of poet Christopher Dewdney and resides in Toronto.
I consider myself to be a 'leap of imagination' writer, and in "Falling Angels" I was imagining not just a nuclear family but a nuclear-shelter family. What would happen, I wondered, if a father decided to put the backyard bomb shelter to the test, if he and his wife and kids hunkered underground for the two weeks that the government defense pamphlets of the time said were sufficient following a nuclear strike?
