Was twice nominated for Broadway's Tony Award as author of a Best Play nominee: in 1970 for "Indians" and in 1979 for "Wings." He was also nominated in 1982 as Best Book (Musical) for "Nine."

His book for the musical, High Society, was performed at the Open Air Theatre and was nominated for a 2004 Laurence Olivier Theatre Award for Outstanding Musical Production of 2003.
