Whitaker was the lightweight silver medalist in the 1982 World Championships, followed by the gold medalist in the 1983 Pan American Games as well as the 1984 Olympics. Whitaker subsequently embarked on a professional career where he became world champion in four different weight divisions. For his accomplishments, he was named the 1989 Combatant of the year by “Ring Magazine”.
