Yat-sen Sun was born on November 12, 1866 in Hsiang-shan, Kwangtung Province, China. He was married to Ching-Ling Soong and Lu Mu-chen. He died on March 12, 1925 in Peking, China. His "Three Principles of the People," which include nationalism, people's livelihood and civil rights, was inspired by Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address ("of the people, by the people, for the people").

His crystal coffin was donated by Joseph Stalin. However, it was never used, since by the time it was shipped to Beijing, Dr. Sun was already buried.

He was a Christian baptized in Hawaii. Nonetheless, he supported the Soviet cause and was a personal friend of V.I. Lenin and Joseph Stalin.

Had three universities named after him, in Guangzhou (Canton), Taiwan and Moscow (disbanded in 1931).

He received his medical training in the Hong Kong College of Medicine, the predecessor of the University of Hong Kong.

He is greatly revered by all Chinese people, Nationalists and Communists alike, and is officially proclaimed "Father of the Nation" or "Father of the Fatherland." As such, he is China's answer to Augustus Caesar, George Washington, Peter and Great and V.I. Lenin.

He was the first president of the Republic of China, serving as provisional president between January and March of 1911 and as President Extraordinary between 1921-1922. He also twice served as Generalissimo of the Army and Navy of China, between 1917-1918 and 1923-1925 (his death).
