1At the pre-game dinner for the teams, emceed by Bob Hope, Billy Wells had a wish fulfilled in an unexpected manner. He had mentioned to friends that because she was such a good dancer he would like a date with his favorite movie star, Debbie Reynolds. Michigan State Sports Information Director, Fred Stabley, learned about this and made some contacts to surprise Billy. While Billy was dancing on the stage Debbie Reynolds slipped unnoticed behind Billy and put her arms around him.
2The 1954 Rose Bowl Game was the 40th Rose Bowl Game and was played on January 1, 1954. It had the first color television "colorcast", viewable on 200 sets across the United States. Tickets to the game cost $5.50, but students were able to get in for $2.29.
