#Fact
Son of an Army colonel. Had two siblings.
A drinking problem effectively ended his career in the mid 1940s and his health rapidly declined. He entered Veteran's Administration Hospital in Los Angeles suffering from cancer of the mouth, right adrenal and kidney and died there of pneumonia.
According to author Laura Wagner in her Films of the Golden Age article on Weldon (Winter 2015/2016 issue), the actor, in his early stage career, tried to pass himself off as the nephew of U.S. Senator Weldon Heyburn (1852-1912) to gain publicity. The Senator's family claimed he was a fraud and exposed his lie.
His marriage to second wife, actress Greta Nissen was annulled on the grounds that their Mexican marriage in Tijuana was not legal.
Weldon attended the University of Alabama and studied law at George Washington University until changing his course of career to acting and performing with stock companies in Pittsburgh.
Made his Broadway debut in 1927 in The Mystery Man. The husky, darkly handsome actor who bore a slight resemblance to Clark Gable appeared in a number of leading man roles, notably opposite Lenore Ulric in Pagan Lady.
Served in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War II; is buried at Arlington National Cemetery (Section 7, Site 8094).
