Ute Lemper (born 4 July 1963) is a German singer and actress renowned for her interpretation of the work of Kurt Weill. Her numerous roles in musicals include playing Sally Bowles in the original Paris production of Cabaret, for which she won the 1987 Molière Award for Best Newcomer, and Velma Kelly in the revival of Chicago in both London and New York, which won her the 1998 Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical.

On her native Germany: I was very critical of my own background - with the way I grew up - and I did not find my surroundings open or tolerant enough. My spirit couldn't run free. I was uptight in that place and I found a vaster freedom abroad.
In the late 1980s, early 1990s, she was in a long-term relationship with Volker Schlöndorff. He planned to cast her as Hildegard Knef in a movie based on Knef's autobiography, "The Gift Horse". Bernd Eichinger was going to produce the film which was finally made almost twenty years later as Hilde (2009) with Heike Makatsch in the title role.

She lived in Münster (until 1981), Vienna (1981-83), Berlin (1984-85 & 1991-92), Stuttgart (1985), Paris (1986-87 & 1993-97), Frankfurt (1988-89), and London (1989-91 & 1997-99) before finally moving to New York in 1999.

Michael Nyman wrote the 1992 album "Songbook" especially for her.

Robert Altman had planned to cast her in a remake of Mata Hari (1931), but the movie never came about.

Maurice Béjart created a ballet for her called "La morte subite" (1991).
Has four children: two children from her first husband David Tabatsky, a son Max Emanuel Tabatsky (b.1994) and a daughter Stella Tabatsky (b.1996); also has two children from her second husband Todd Turkisher - sons Julian Lazaar Turkisher (b.2005) and Jonas Turkisher (b.2011).
