In 1945, during the island's liberation by Allied forces, she suffered shrapnel wounds to one of her legs. Her mother eventually returned to Manila and brought her daughter back to the States.

Her professional career ended in 1959 when she appeared in the new musical "At the Grand," an adaptation of "Grand Hotel" that co-starred Paul Muni. The show closed during tryouts in San Francisco before reaching Broadway. After that, she settled into her wifely role of Mrs. Steve McQueen.
