Murray Louis was born on November 4, 1926 in Brooklyn, New York, USA. He is an actor, known for Hanya: Portrait of a Pioneer (1988), Totem (1963) and American Masters (1985).
He staged works for the Royal Danish Ballet, the Hamburg Ballet, the Scottish Ballet, the Limón Dance Company, and the Batsheva Dance Company.

During WWII, he worked for the Office of Naval Intelligence in San Francisco. After the war, he stayed in San Francisco and studied dance. He eventually danced in productions of choreographer Alwin Nikolais in New York. He found time to study speech and theater at New York University. He moved into choreography, and in 1953 he established his own dance company.

He received two Guggenheim fellowships, and grants from the Rockefeller, Mellon, and Ford foundations. He was a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French government.
