The son of a cantor, Rasumny made his stage debut at 14 and toured Europe and South America with the Moscow Art Theatre. His surname "Rasumny" has a nice sound in Russian: it means "reasonable," "rational," "sensible," even "intelligent." Strictly transliterated into English, letter by letter, it would be spelled "Razumnyy." But he'd acted a few years in Germany before immigrating to the US, and in Germany he acquired the spelling "Rasumny." He never bothered to change that spelling after arriving in Hollywood.
