2Son of James Moody and Ruby Moody. He was raised in Newark, New Jersey. He played with the all African American Army Air Forces band during World War II and was discharged in 1946.
3His musical career was disrupted by alcoholism twice in 1948 where he recovered in Paris, France until 1951 and again in 1958 after a fire destroyed a Philadelphia nightclub. He checked into the Overbrook psychiatric hospital in Cedar Grove, New Jersey.
4He played with Dizzy Gillespie in 1946 until 1948 and again in 1963 until 1969.
5He is survived by his second wife, Linda Peterson McGowan; three sons, Patrick Moody, Regan Moody, and Danny McGowan Moodyl and a daughter, Michelle Moody Bagdanove; a brother, Louis Watters; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
6He was awarded the Jazz Master in 1998 by the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington D.C.
