John Stanton Shirley-Quirk CBE (28 August 1931 – 7 April 2014) was an English bass-baritone. A member of the English Opera Group during 1964–76, he gave premiere performances of several operatic and vocal works by Benjamin Britten, recording these and other works under the composer's direction. He also sang and recorded a wide range of works by other composers, ranging from Handel through Tchaikovsky to Henze.

1He was appointed a CBE in 1975.
2In 1962, he made his operatic debut at Glyndebourne as the Doctor in "Pelléas et Mélisande".
3He earned a chemistry degree at Liverpool University in 1952. After national service in the RAF, he taught chemistry at a technical college in London. He studied singing, first with Austen Carnegie, later with Roy Henderson. In 1961 he became a vicar choral at St Paul's Cathedral.
4After a performance of Bach's Christmas Oratorio in 1963, he was congratulated by a stranger from the audience. The stranger was composer Benjamin Britten. Britten had been invited to hear him, and this was effectively his audition for joining the English Opera Group.
