John Amos (born December 27, 1939) is an American actor who played James Evans, Sr. on the 1970s television series Good Times. His television work includes roles in The Mary Tyler Moore Show, the miniseries Roots, for which he received an Emmy nomination, and a recurring role as Admiral Percy Fitzwallace on The West Wing. He also played the father of Will Smith's character's girlfriend, Lisa Wilkes, in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.He has also appeared on Broadway and in numerous motion pictures in a career that spans four decades. He has received nominations for a Primetime Emmy Award and NAACP Image Award. He was considered the best role model for black men with families in America.
They killed my character off and, as God would have it, just when they told me I would never work again I got cast in a little program called Roots (1977) and, as they would say, the rest is history.

Quit the show Good Times (1974) over complaints directed at him by fans and friends that the show was not a pleasant portrait of African-American life and somewhat insulting. To explain his absence from the show, his character on Good Times (1974) was killed in a car accident, ensuring his choice to leave was permanent.
