Philip Michael Ondaatje, OC (/ɒnˈdɑːtʃiː/; born September 12, 1943), is a Sri Lankan-born Canadian novelist and poet. He won the Booker Prize for his novel The English Patient (1992), which was adapted as a 1996 film of the same name. It won multiple Academy Awards.
The character name, 'Kip', was apparently his nickname at his school, Dulwich College. This was a reference to cooking oil stains on his exercise books which reminded the wags among his fellow pupils of kipper fish which were canned in such oil.

He was awarded the O.C. (Officer of the Order of Canada) on July 11, 1988 for his services to Canadian Literature.
