My whole life was one mistake after another because I was totally unqualified, I took whatever came along. I'd always cooked from the age of four. I didn't really have much knowledge. With my aunt's family in Benghazi I had only a Baby Belling to cook on.
Thousands die from smoking each year, but knowing this I continue to smoke myself. It is my informed decision.
[on vegetarians] There were few around in my young days and those we did come across we considered to be German spies. After all, Hitler was a veggie.
In London in the Sixties I was often short of money and sometimes even without a roof over my head, but I was never without a glass of champagne and a party invitation.
My mother had no idea of how to cook and no wish to learn, existing on gorgonzola, coffee, and chocolates after the demise of any form of servant. My father, having gone through two world wars, was far too frightened to put on a kettle and my brothers who married young to very good wives...never showed any signs of wanting to whip up something delicious for a treat.
