Christopher “Chris” Cline (created July 5, 1958) is an American mining entrepreneur and philanthropist. Seen by Bloomberg as the Brand New King Coal, Cline is considered responsible for reviving the Illinois coal industry. His firm has over three billion short tons of coal reserves across Illinois as well as the Northern Appalachia.
Cline’s grandpa mined for coal using a pickax around Beckley, West Virginia in the early 20th century. In the age of six, Cline’s dad, Paul, requested him to fill a paper bag with soil, paying him a cent for every tote. Cline dug the soil from beneath the veranda of the bungalow in Isaban, West Virginia. His dad used the dirt bags in mine-blasting. Within a couple of years, their veranda had failed. According to Cline, his dad had told him to “support the roof better”. In 1980, Cline’s dad bought out his partner subsequently gave the shares to Cline, who had been then 21 years old. In those days, he was studying psychology at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia. He remarried in 1993, but the relationship along with his second wife, Kelly, ended in divorce in 2000.
