Gerald P. Nye was born on December 19, 1892 in Hortonville, Wisconsin, USA as Gerald Prentice Nye. He died on July 17, 1971 in Washington, District of Columbia, USA.
In 1934 his Senate committee began an investigation of the munitions and armaments industry. The hearings made headlines for months and proved embarrassing to both political parties and several Wall Street powerhouses, including J.P. Morgan. The next year Nye drafted the Neutrality Law, forbidding the shipments of arms to belligerent nations.

A Republican, he chaired a Senate committee that investigated the financial dealings of millionaires, and substantial contributors to the Republican party, Andrew Mellon and Harry Sinclair. The report was embarrassing to both men and the Republican National Committee, which urged Nye to bury it. He refused and when the report was issued it caused a furor.
