Persis Khambatta passed away on August 18, 1998, less than two months away from what would have been her 50th birthday on October 2.
She was temporarily blinded during the scene in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) which Lieutenant Ilia was taken by V'Ger, a scene which required her to keep her eyes wide open while being bombarded by intense light. This resulted in a form of flash blindness from which she soon recovered.
In 1965, she entered that year's Miss Universe contest held in Miami Beach, Florida. She was not as lucky at Miss Universe as she failed to be in the top 15, and the contest was won by 18-year-old Apasra Hongsakula of Thailand.
Had starred in the shelved film "Tum Salamat Raho" opposite Shetty (famous villain and fight master). This would have been Shetty's first film as a lead actor.

Auditioned for the female lead role in the James Bond film Octopussy (1983), which went to Maud Adams.
Has an action figure modeled after her Star Trek character, Lieutenant Ilia.
Before her untimely death, she wrote and published a coffee table book about the history of the Miss India pageant titled "Pride of India".
She shaved her head for the role of Lieutenant Ilia in the film Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979). At first, she shed tears over the haircut, but smiled after the finishing powder was applied to her scalp and her facial features were more defined by Fred Phillips.
Underwent heart bypass surgery in 1983.
Was Femina Miss India 1965.
