Frank Charles Shorter (born October 31, 1947) is an American former long-distance runner who won the gold medal in the marathon at the 1972 Summer Olympics. His victory is credited with igniting the running boom in the United States in the 1970s.
Won the Gold Medal in the Marathon at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich, Germany. Won the Silver Medal in the Marathon at the 1976 Summer Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada. It was later found that the Gold Medalist, Waldemar Cierpinski of East Germany, had been using performance enhancing drugs.
