He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Jayne Barry-Smith of Pine Plains, New York; a daughter, Jessica Smith; and a sister, Elaine Smith Kramer.

Son of lawyer, Julius Smith and Sara Smith of New York City. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin. He attended law school for six months before dropping out. He was drafted into the United States Army and served in Germany in the early 1950s.

He and his family owned a homestead in Pine Plains, New York that was built in 1700s by a Revolutionary War veteran where they raised thoroughbred horses.
