Edward Petherbridge (born on 3 August 1936) is an English actor, writer and artist. Among his many roles, he portrayed Lord Peter Wimsey in the 1987 BBC television adaptations of Dorothy L. Sayers's novels. He created the role of Guildenstern in Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead. At the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1980, he was a memorable Newman Noggs in the company's adaptation of Dickens's The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby.

Petherbridge is married to actress Emily Richard, with whom he costarred in The Life and Times of Nicholas Nickleby (on stage in London and New York, and in the TV miniseries); the play The Busman's Honeymoon; and Pomp and Circumstance.

Has twice been nominated for Broadway's Tony Award as Best Actor (Featured Role - Play): in 1982, for playing Newman Noggs in "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby," a role he recreated in the television version with the same title, The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (1982); and in 1985 for playing Charles Marsden in a revival of Eugene O'Neill's "Strange Interlude," a role he also recreated in the television version with the same title, American Playhouse: Strange Interlude (1988).
