In 1958, he slipped on a damp mound, sustained a slipped disc, and needed surgery. At the time, a team was allowed to have only 2 players on the disabled list at the same time. Since there were already 2 players on the DL, Cleveland had to release him. The following year, he lost the tip of his right (pitching hand) index finger in an accident, and retired in 1960.
