She changed her birth surname from Caplan to Catz as there was already an actress with that name. She came up with the last name after seeing a doodle of a cat but ironically she is extremely allergic to cats.

She has a son Sonny (born 2001) and a daughter Honour (born 2006), with actor husband Michael Higgs. They met on the set of the TV programme The Bill (1984).
