Her alleged killer, fellow Peace Corps volunteer Dennis Priven was put on trial, yet, despite the evidence against him, the Tongan jury found Priven not guilty by reason of insanity. A top U.S. embassy official assured the court he would be placed in a mental hospital in the United States, but, after spending only two days in a Washington, D.C. hospital, he was allowed to go free after another psychiatrist found no evidence of schizophrenia.
