David Ian Hewlett (born 18 April 1968) is an English-Canadian actor, writer and director best known for his roles as Dr. Meredith Rodney McKay on the science fiction television shows Stargate SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe, as David Worth in the 1997 Canadian science fiction psychological horror movie Cube, as Grant Jansky on the 1996 Canadian TV series Traders, and as Douglas Hunsiker in Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

With his girlfriend Jane Loughman he adopted a dog from a local animal shelter which was scheduled for being euthanized. The Rottweiler-Terrier mix is now called Mars, and is one of the stars of David and Jane's new comedy feature film called A Dog's Breakfast (2007).

Originally appeared as "Dr. Rodney McKay", as a one-time guest star in the Stargate SG-1 (1997) episode, Stargate SG-1: 48 Hours (2001). He was then invited back for the Season Six premiere, episodes Stargate SG-1: Redemption: Part 1 (2002) & Stargate SG-1: Redemption: Part 2 (2002), the following season. When the shows creators were casting for the spin-off series, Stargate: Atlantis (2004), he was originally called in to read for a different role. However, he returned to the "Stargate franchise" as McKay, only this time, he was a series lead in the smash hit, Stargate: Atlantis (2004).
