Daphne Oxenford was born on October 31, 1919 in Barnet, London, England as Daphne Margaret du Grivel Oxenford. She made her stage debut at the age of 13, and attended the Embassy School of Acting. She joined Ensa, the British armed forces' entertainment wing, at the end of World War II, and toured Britain and Germany performing in revues.

She was known to millions as the voice of the BBC children's radio program "Listen With Mother". She opened each show by asking "Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin." The program consisted of stories, songs, and nursery rhymes. It began at 1:45pm every weekday, to coincide with the end of lunchtime. The program ran from 1950 to 1971.

Her big break came in 1947, when she went along to give a friend moral support at an audition. She was coaxed onto the stage herself, where she performed a skit she had written herself. Film actress and music-hall star Joyce Grenfell was in the audience and recognized her talent. Grenfell became a close friend.
