Template:Pp-moveChristopher John "Chris" Dodd (born May 27, 1944) is an American lobbyist, lawyer, and Democratic Party politician who served as a United States Senator from Connecticut for a thirty-year period ending with the 111th United States Congress.Dodd is a Connecticut native and a graduate of Georgetown Preparatory School in Bethesda, Maryland, and Providence College. His father, Thomas J. Dodd, was one of Connecticut's United States Senators from 1959 to 1971. Chris Dodd served in the Peace Corps for two years prior to entering law school at the University of Louisville, and during law school concurrently served in the United States Army Reserve.Dodd returned to Connecticut, winning election in 1974 to the United States House of Representatives from Connecticut's 2nd congressional district and was reelected in 1976 and 1978. He was elected United States Senator in the elections of 1980, and was the longest-serving senator in Connecticut's history.Dodd served as general chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1995 to 1997. He served as Chairman of the Senate Banking Committee until his retirement. In 2006, Dodd decided to run for the Democratic nomination for President of the United States, but eventually withdrew after running behind several other competitors. In January 2010, Dodd announced that he would not run for re-election in the 2010 midterm elections. Dodd was succeeded by fellow Democrat Richard Blumenthal. On March 1, 2011, the Motion Picture Association of America announced that Dodd will head that organization.
He once ended a long day of political meetings in Memphis by launching a food fight at a Dunkin Donuts shop (this was 1978).

Dodd was born with a caul, a fetal membrane covering the head at birth, which according to legend is a sign of good fortune. The attending physician suggested to his mother that he might grow up to be president. "What's the matter with Roosevelt?" Mrs. Dodd allegedly replied.

As chairman of the Western Hemisphere Affairs Subcommittee of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in the 1980s, he often led the Democrats against the policies of President Ronald Reagan.

Dodd served in the Peace Corps from 1966 to 1968 in Moncion, a village in the Dominican Republic. He lived alone in a cold-water tin-roof house, served as a rural community developer for eleven villages, opened a school, a youth club, and a maternity hospital, and launched a family planning program. When his stint was over, he hitchhiked across thousands of miles in Latin America before arriving home on Christmas Eve in 1968.

Dodd and Arlen Specter (R.-Penn.) founded the Children's Caucus to deal with issues of child abuse, latchkey children, and high school dropouts. In 1986, Dodd became chairman of the Subcommittee on Children, Families, Drugs, and Alcoholism.
