1Her father was an entomologist with the US Forest Service, and the family often accompanied him on trips into the field. Her brothers, John and Frank, became prominent naturalists.
2She earned a bachelor's degree in 1941 from Penn State University, where she studied English and science. She later worked as a reporter in Washington, DC, first for the International News Service, a forerunner of UPI, and afterward for the Washington Post, where she wrote features about the White House.
3After her marriage, the household grew to include 173 pets, not counting cats and dogs. Among them were an owl that enjoyed taking showers in the family tub, and a beaver which destroyed the furniture.
4She was a Newbery Award-winning writer for young people whose books brought to life the natural world from the Catskill Mountains to the Alaskan tundra.
