Won 1959 Daytona 500 at the new Daytona International Speedway over Johnny Beauchamp, took NASCAR officials 3 days to look at photos to confirm an "official" winner.
Crashed with Johnny Beauchamp in 1961 at Daytona. He was in the hospital for four months from his injuries. He raced in four more short track races, until he retired. Beauchamp never raced again.
