Bessie Bearden was born in November 1893 in Oakland, North Carolina as Bessye Johnson. She was an actress, known for The Gunsaulus Mystery (1921). She was married to Richard Howard Bearden. She died on September 16, 1943 in New York City, New York, USA.
Bessye Bearden was the New York City regional editor for the Chicago "Defender", a black-owned newspaper; she was also the first black woman to serve on a local school board (no. 15) in New York City, serving from 1922 to 1939. She was the mother of Harlem Renaissance artist Romare Bearden (1914-1988).
